New York – The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has named Scaran Oil Service Co., Inc. as the New York District’s 2018 Jeffrey Butland Family-owned Business of the Year. Nominated by the Staten Island Small Business Development Center (SBDC), Scaran was selected for its evidence of success as measured by sales and profits, increased employment opportunities for family members and non-family members and demonstrated potential for long-term business success and economic growth. Winners of the Jeffrey Butland Family-owned Business Award must also serve as a majority owner and operator of a small business with at least a fifteen-year track record.

Scaran Oil Service Co. Inc. was founded in 1930 by Vito Scarangello as a coal and ice delivery company. After serving as a bomber pilot in World War II, Frank Sr., Vito Scarangello’ s son, joined the business and soon started delivering kerosene and home heating oil on Staten Island. Profits boomed through the 50s and 60s until they peaked in the early 1970s before oil prices dropped. Scarangello used this moment to diversify the company into heating and air conditioning work.

Frank Scarangello, Jr. joined the company in 1975. By 1984, Scaran added a full HVAC and sheet metal fabrication shop. Frank’s brother Tom joined the company in 1988 – the same year he earned his NYC Master’s Plumber’s license, allowing him to add plumbing services to the family business’ offerings. In 2000, Scaran purchased its largest competitor. In 2004, the company introduced new pricing practices that delivered even better customer service to their clientele.

Beth Goldberg, Director of the New York SBA District Office said that family-owned businesses are vital to the local economy. “Scaran Oil Service has a remarkable story. Nearly 100 years in business, three generations all working together on Staten Island—it’s the American Dream! SBA’s so proud to name the Scarangellos as our Jeffrey Butland Family-owned Business of the Year.”

Scaran Oil Service began working with the SBA through the Staten Island SBDC in 2002 when it received a Business Interruption Disaster loan following the attack of September 11th. The brothers have continued to receive business guidance from the Staten Island SBDC in accessing capital, leveraging half-a-million dollars in small business financing throughout the last decade. The company currently employs 50 people.

The New York District SBA Office will recognize the Scarangellos’ s accomplishment at a local ceremony on May 1, 2018, at the Microsoft Technology Center in Times Square. Registration for the ceremony is open through this webpage.
